Two people have been arrested in relation to the death of a toddler.
On Wednesday, Detective Senior Sergeant Sally Patrick said in a statement police arrested a 35-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman over 19-month-old Casino Ataria-Wharehinga's death.
"A homicide investigation into Casino's death was launched in January after she passed away from severe injuries she suffered at an address in Te Hapara, Gisborne," Det Snr Sgt Patrick said.
She added the little girl was badly beaten and died because of her injuries.
Police said the pair knew the victim.
"The man is charged with manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard for safety and the woman is charged with perverting the cause of justice," Det Snr Sgt Patrick said.
The pair are also charged with neglecting a child.
The duo are set to appear in the Gisborne District Court on Thursday.
