Weather: Warning of 'blustery Friday' for top of North Island thanks to 'classic squash zone'

"It'll be a blustery Friday."

That's the message from WeatherWatch for those in the Auckland region with a warning gusts could even reach 100km/h.

In WeatherWatch's latest forecast bulletin, head forecaster Philip Duncan said the blustery winds will be strong from Thursday and mostly felt at the top of the North Island.

"It gets stronger on Friday. Friday, we've got severe weather possibilities, both heavy rain, though the rain not so problematic, but the wind."

Duncan said the gusts could be felt from the Bay of Islands down to Auckland and the Coromandel peninsula.

"It'll be a blustery Friday from the east to the north-east."

Along with the wind, NIWA said wet weather is likely too for parts of the motu this week, with Friday and Saturday the days to watch.

In a tweet, NIWA weather said a low-pressure system is forecasted to move from the top of the North Island further south.

"[Bringing] increased chances for heavy rain, strong wind, thunderstorms [and] warmth," to tweet read.

"Worth monitoring as the week unfolds."
