The supermarket franchise Countdown is recalling its Christmas ham after a possible bacteria contamination.

A specific batch of the Countdown brand Bone-in New Zealand Free Farmed Half Leg Ham from Countdown Spotswood in New Plymouth is being recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria, the Ministry for Primary Industries said.

The batch was sold from December 8 until December 12 with a use-by date of 27.02.23 affected.

Consumers who may have bought the contaminated product are urged to check the date mark on the product and not to consume the ham if affected.

So far, there have been no reports of associated illness, however, anyone who has consumed any of the product and has any concerns about their health should seek medical advice, MPI said.

Customers should return the product to their retailer for a full refund.

Listeria is a foodborne bacterium that can make you sick. It usually goes away on its own but can cause "life-threatening" problems for some people including pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea or vomiting and diarrhoea.
