Drivers are raging after "awful" road markings and signage almost caused a head-on collision on a busy Auckland road.
Dashcam footage sent to Newshub shows a motorist driving north on Pakuranga Rd on Highway 5 coming off the Panmure Bridge and heading towards Lagoon Drive traffic lights.
As the driver comes off the bridge, a gantry - a steel structure over the highway which holds traffic signs - showed two green lights indicating the two left lanes are open to northbound traffic and a right light showing the far right lane is for southbound traffic.
As the driver goes through the traffic lights after exiting the bridge, they narrowly avoid a head-on collision with an incoming Toyota.
The driver told Newshub "it was only by pure luck that no collision happened".
"This left me feeling rather embarrassed and seriously confused as to how this happened," the driver said.
The footage also shows the road layout in the opposite direction, which has road markings telling drivers they need to move into the left lane but it's not clear that motorists need to immediately merge.
Auckland Transport told Newshub the road layout is part of the Eastern Busway project and has been in place since February 2022, following the commissioning of the illuminated studs.
"Auckland Transport is currently monitoring the road layout at this location," a spokesperson for AT said.
"AT has not received reports of any accidents since the layout came into effect."
The driver said they are "confused and seriously annoyed" because of the near head-on collision.
"[I'm] frustrated that the poorly designed road layout had almost caused a potentially serious accident," the driver said.
"With the lead-up to Christmas, my money is on an accident happening during this busy time and what a horrible feeling it would be for a family to be involved in an accident."
The video was also posted on a local Facebook page to the uproar of Kiwis.
One person said, "Who the hell designed that intersection. I'm amazed there are no regular head-on collisions there!"
Another person said, "This needs fixing up fast," while another added, "Holy hell that's shocking".
The driver told Newshub "something has to be done before it’s too late".
