A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a woman died in the west Auckland suburb of Massey on Monday evening.
He will appear in the Waitākere District Court tomorrow, charged with murder.
Officers were called to a property on Royal Road in Massey at around 5:45pm yesterday to reports a woman had been seriously injured. However she died at the scene, sparking a homicide investigation.
Neighbours told Newshub they heard screaming at the time of the incident, with police telling them to stay inside.
The New Zealand Herald reports members of the public said they saw a body on the road and heard a woman screaming. Other witnesses have described seeing a shirtless man holding a knife.
Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Poland, Waitematā CIB said the investigation team has worked through the night to make the arrest.
"Police are continuing to support the victim's family through this very difficult time and hope the arrest brings some reassurance to the Massey community," he said in a statement.
"There will be a number of enquiries ongoing over the coming days and Police would like to thank the members of the community that assisted both at the scene and over the past 24 hours."
Locals have been coming to the site of the woman's death to pay their respect by laying flowers in tribute.
Massey resident Agnes Williams told Newshub she wanted to pay her respect for the woman that died.
"If one of our people had been killed around here, like locals, we would come to contribute our flowers," Williams said.
Williams said the news is "shocking" and once she found out, her thoughts immediately turned to her children.
As the matter is now before the courts, Police say they are unable to comment further.
