Mongrel Mob associate charged after dramatic police chase across Auckland

A gang associate has been charged after a dramatic early morning police chase across Auckland.

The 37-year-old was discharged from hospital overnight and is currently in police custody.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Salton said the man, who is an associate of the Mongrel Mob, is expected in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday on a range of serious charges.

He is charged with aggravated robbery and assaults with intent to rob, Salton said.

"The investigation has progressed over the past day and moving forward we cannot rule out further charges being laid as part of the investigation," Salton said.

The dramatic chases started just before 5am on Monday in Epsom, central Auckland, where the man allegedly tried to carjack someone at gunpoint on Gillies Avenue.

After the failed carjacking the man allegedly stole a car and fled before being picked up by the police helicopter driving towards a property on Cedar Heights Avenue in Massey.

The car was then spiked on the onramp but the man allegedly kept driving towards the Lincoln Road offramp.

"At this point, he has allegedly driven at two members of the public and attempted to steal their vehicles," police said.

The man then collided with a police patrol car and was taken to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries.
