Wellington police have arrested a 23-year-old man following a stabbing on Lambton Quay on Thursday night.
Police were called to Lambton Quay outside Countdown at about 8pm on Thursday after a person was stabbed. They were transported to hospital in a serious condition.
A police spokesperson said they were able to respond "swiftly" and arrest the man after members of the public reported the incident immediately.
"We understand this incident is unsettling for the community."
The 23-year-old is due to appear in the Wellington District Court on Friday charged with wounding with intent to injure.
On Thursday night, police said Wellingtonians should expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
A Countdown spokesperson shared their thoughts with the victim and added their staff were not injured in the stabbing.
"Everyone is being offered counselling support on-site and we'll continue to offer this to our team over the coming days."
