Police in south Auckland were on high alert on Wednesday as a gang convoy descended on the area for the funeral for Daniel Eliu, killed outside a church earlier this month.
A livestream showed a large turnout at Manukau Memorial Gardens.
Mourners could be heard paying tribute, singing songs and making dog barking noises.
There was a large police presence on Puhinui Rd outside the park. An officer at the scene told Newshub there had so far not been any trouble as a result of the gathering and everyone had been well-behaved.
He said there were minor traffic delays around Puhinui Rd earlier when they arrived at Manukau Memorial Gardens about 1pm.
The service was held at Māngere Memorial Hall before midday.
Mongrel Mob member Eliu was gunned down outside Manukau's Seventh Day Adventist Church on Puhinui Rd on Saturday, December 17.
Police said they had deployed a highly visible presence in the area and warned any unlawful behaviour would be investigated and met with enforcement action.
Anyone travelling on the road was urged to avoid acting in a way that put other motorists at risk.
In an earlier statement, police said anyone who felt threatened by the group or witnessed illegal activity was encouraged to call 111 for immediate assistance.
People can also report any concerns or footage of the group online at 105.police.govt.nz, by calling 105, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-nz.org.
