A person has died and another is seriously injured after a crash in the Bay of Plenty in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Police said emergency services were called at 3:10am to a serious single-vehicle crash on State Highway 33, Paengaroa.
In an update, police confirmed a person had died and another is seriously injured.
The road remains closed and police expect it to be shut for some time.
Police said there are no suitable diversions available in the immediate vicinity and continue to ask motorists to avoid the area and delay travel, if possible.
With nearly two weeks still to go, Ministry of Transport figures show this year's provisional road toll sits at 362 deaths.
