Wellington police are asking the public to help identify two people after a woman found an unknown man in her home twice, during she was assaulted.

Det Sgt Grant Carroll said CCTV photographs show two men in the area about the time the woman was assaulted, during the alleged offender's second visit, in the suburb of Mt Cook.

And now police want help to identify the pair as they may hold "crucial" information.

At 12:30am on Tuesday the woman was disturbed when a man attempted to climb through her window. During that incident, Carroll said the woman was unharmed and the man fled after being seen.

But two days later, at 6:40am on Thursday, the woman was woken up by who's believed to be the same man, and proceeded to assault the victim.

"Again, the offender fled and was unable to be located by a police dog," said Carroll.

The man is described as being large, solid build, with a large head, broad shoulders, large nostrils and dark skin.

Carroll said the offender was wearing a dark grey beanie and spoke in a soft, yet deep, voice.

"This offending is a serious concern to police. We want to locate the offender as soon as possible and the two men in the images may be able to assist us with that."

Carroll is also urging anyone who may have captured imagery on security cameras or dashcams to get in touch with police.

"These events have been incredibly disturbing for the victim," he said. "Every person deserves to feel safe in their home and we are committed to finding those responsible."

Police are asking those with information to contact them on 105 and reference file number 221222/6152, or fill out a report online.

Alternatively, information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
