Businesses are being warned to be on the lookout for fake cash amid reports of counterfeit banknotes circulating in Northland.
There have been reports of fake $50 notes being presented at multiple businesses in Whangārei recently, police said on Wednesday.
An investigation is underway.
"It is important that businesses involved in handling money are aware of security features within New Zealand banknotes," said acting Det Snr Sgt Shane Pilmer, of Whangārei/Kaipara.
"The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has clear guides outlining the security features of New Zealand banknotes and how to spot counterfeit notes including a downloadable PDF quick guide on their website."
Among the security features of New Zealand banknotes include them being made from polymer as opposed to paper, having raised printing and unique series numbers, and hidden writing only visible through a magnifying glass.
"It's important for people to understand it is an offence to make, use or be in possession of counterfeit banknotes," Pilmer said.
"If you believe someone is trying to pass you a counterfeit banknote, do not accept it and notify [the] police."
Call 105 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 to report any information about fake money circulating.
In June, two people were arrested for allegedly using counterfeit money in Auckland.
