Small tornado strikes rural Taranaki home, damaging roof

A small tornado has struck a rural home near Taranaki causing damage to its roof.

Emergency services were called to the property at about 2:45pm on Thursday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson told Newshub the tornado damaged the roof of a single-storey property in a rural area, adding it was "very localised" and crews have since secured the damage and left.  

Locals Newshub spoke to hadn't seen the small tornado but heard emergency services respond.
