Two people have died overnight following a single-vehicle crash in Timaru.
Police were called to Evans St, Timaru, at around 7:45pm on Thursday.
"The two people sadly died at the scene," said a police spokesperson.
Police haven't yet determined what caused the fatal crash and said their enquires are ongoing.
It was a tragic night on Aotearoa's roads on Thursday. A crash in Wairau Valley, Tasman, also killed two people.
The two fatal crashes in the South Island bring Aotearoa's summer road toll to eight.
In 2021 the summer road toll reached 16 by the end of the Christmas and New Year period.
