A person has died following a two-vehicle crash in the Bay of Plenty on Saturday morning.

The serious crash was one of two in the space of 30 minutes on Saturday morning.

The first crash occurred on State Highway 29A, Maungatapu shortly after 6:35am.

Police said a person died at the scene while a second person was transported to hospital.

Police said the highway is blocked following the crash, which involved two cars, about 1km north of the Maungatapu roundabout.

Enquiries into the crash are ongoing, police said.

Police said traffic was being diverted and urged motorists to take alternate routes.

St John told Newshub they attended the crash on State Highway 29A with four vehicles.

A spokesperson said they treated one patient who was transported to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition.

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency said the highway is closed between Turret Rd roundabout and the Taipari St off-ramp.

The second crash occurred at around 7am between Golf Street and Tee Street in the Bay of Plenty.

Police said Arapuni Street in Putaruru is currently blocked after a car collided with a power pole.

There are no reported injuries and there are reportedly power lines down across the road.

Police ask motorists to take alternate routes.
