Waitaki Boys' High School, one of Aotearoa's oldest, is slowly being eaten away by the Pacific Ocean

One of the oldest secondary schools in the country is slowly being eaten away by the Pacific Ocean.

Waitaki Boys' High School near Oamaru is losing up to two metres of land every year due to coastal erosion.

The school sits proudly along the idyllic north Otago coast but that picture has changed significantly over the decades.

"You do the maths on one to two metres a year, if that continues to happen then it will be an issue," school rector Darryl Patterson told Newshub.

And work is happening now to protect the school for another century.

The Ministry of Education has commissioned a report to find out more about the rate of erosion at the school and possible options to stop it going further.

Erosion has already swallowed an estimated 30 to 40 metres over the past half-century, changing the shape of the sports field.

"Some teams do train on the back field there but there's certainly no organised matches, cricket matches, just not enough space to do that anymore," Patterson said.

But there is certainty about the school's stance.

"We want this school to remain here on this beautiful site for as long as it possibly can."
