Weather: New Year weather mostly settled, but windy conditions on the way

The New Year weather forecast is here and most of New Zealand will see in 2023 with settled conditions - but there will be some rain for parts of the country.

As 2022 comes to a close, it will be cooler in the east on New Year's Eve, with showers in the eastern North Island. WeatherWatch said the cooler airflow means places like Gisborne, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin will all likely have daytime highs in the mid to late teens, with possibly 20C in the north.

For the west of the North Island, there's a mixture of sun and cloud with light winds. But there may be an isolated shower or two in the afternoon anywhere north of Waikato.

The South Island will have mostly sunny weather with light winds and afternoon sea breezes. There may be some cloud in the east, which will break away, but some afternoon cloud in the inland eastern ranges is likely.

MetService forecasted similar New Year's Eve weather, adding that there will be relatively clear skies for large parts of the country.

WeatherWatch added that while Auckland has cloudier weather coming, the high is still in the mid-20s and the overnight low will be in the late teens.

Northern areas of Southland will be the coolest on New Year's Eve, with just single-digit overnight lows.

On New Year's Day, the windier easterlies increase in the north and head further down New Zealand, WeatherWatch said, which will bring cloudier weather and a few showers.

The first week of 2023 will bring some humid weather for parts of New Zealand. This sticky weather is encouraged by the low leaving the sub-tropics that will move into Tasman Sea.

"This means mild nights but daytime highs next week in the north may be a little flat due to more cloud," WeatherWatch said.

But wind in the North Island and possibly coastal Canterbury is the main theme for the first week of 2023. These winds will be 20-50km/h around some eastern beaches and coastal areas from this Sunday to Friday.
