Whangamatā Main Beach has reopened after earlier being closed due "extremely dangerous" conditions.
A post on the Whangamatā Surf Life Saving Club Facebook page said the beach was closed at 11:30am, "due to hazardous surf conditions" at high tide.
In an update at 2pm, the club said the beach had since reopened.
"If you plan to come for a swim, please swim between the flags and keep your feet on the ground at all times."
"Our lifeguards are happy to help if you have any questions about the conditions."
Earlier on Thursday, a boat flipped after being hit by a 2.5-3 metre wave in Whangamatā. All three occupants were uninjured.
