MetService is warning of further rainfall for Auckland after unprecedented rain struck the region on Friday.
"The main rain band has moved off to the east of Auckland for the time being and there are a number of Orange Warnings and Watches in place around the North Island," said MetService meteorologist Angus Hines.
"The main rain band returns to Auckland and Northland later on Sunday but rain will come and go for many areas in the North Island."
While it shouldn't match the intensity of what has been, impacts are expected to be severe and wide-reaching.
More flooding will occur through many northern regions in the coming days, and people should stay abreast of the latest information from local emergency management, Civil Defence and metservice.com.
Thunderstorm Outlook
MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, and Taranaki with humid and unstable conditions expected to continue. This lasts until 9pm on Saturday.
"Thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening, with some of them becoming severe about western areas of Northland south of Dargaville, through western areas of Auckland and about Waikato west of Hamilton, in Waitomo, Taumarunui and northern Taranaki until 9pm," MetService said on its site.
"Severe Thunderstorms may produce downpours with intensities of 25 to 40 mm per hour. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain."
There's also the possibility of thunderstorms about the Bay of Plenty and Taupo on Saturday and Sunday.
"Between early afternoon today and 7am Sunday morning, one or two these thunderstorms may become severe, producing localised downpours with intensities of 25 to 40mm per hour," MetService warned.
"Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain."
