Wellington police are disappointed by the number of people who have chosen to drive after drinking.
Police processed 29 drivers who were over the legal limit at checkpoints in Wellington's CBD between 4:00pm on December and 11:00am on January 1, a police spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
"It’s quite frankly an unacceptable decision to drink and then get behind the wheel of a car as you immediately put yourself, your passengers and other road users at risk," Acting Wellington District Commander Inspector Wade Jennings said in a statement on Monday.
Insp Jennings added out of the 4000 people which were breathalysed over the New Year's weekend, most of them were responsible.
"The majority of motorists were doing all the right things, but unfortunately there are still some who made the decision to drive after drinking."
Insp Jennings wanted to remind people that even after eating and sleeping before driving, alcohol can still linger in a person's system.
Out of the 29 drivers, eight of them were processed between 7:00am and 10:00am on Sunday.
The spokesperson added if you're ever questioning whether you feel safe to drive after drinking, the police's simple advice is don't do it.
Wellington police will be out on the roads over the summer to make sure everyone gets to where they are needing to go safely.
