A woman has been charged with murder over the death of a four-week-old baby in January last year.
In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, police said the 22-year-old woman has also been charged with ill-treatment of a child and three counts of assaulting a child.
The charges relate to the death of a baby boy who was hospitalised at Starship Hospital with head injuries. He died in hospital on January 16, 2022.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard said police were contacted by medical authorities following the baby's death and have been investigating the circumstances.
"Any baby homicide is a difficult investigation and the Police team have worked hard to get to this stage," Detective Inspector Beard said.
"This is a sad and tragic case for all those involved, but it is important those allegedly responsible for the abuse of children are held to account."
The woman is scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday afternoon.
