Drone footage taken in the Coromandel shows the widespread impacts heavy rain from Cyclone Gabrielle is having on the area.
The Coromandel Peninsula is in a state of emergency and is also under heavy rain and strong wind warnings, both of which are red warnings. The rain warning currently lasts until 6am on Tuesday, and the wind warning until 9am.
Footage supplied to Newshub shows how widespread the flooding is in the region, with many roads looking more like rivers and some areas mostly underwater.
Not only is the heavy rain causing destruction, but MetService warns severe gales could also cause widespread damage, especially to trees and power lines.
MetService forecast severe gale east to southeasterlies for the area, with gusts reaching 120km/h to 130km/h in exposed places. Winds are expected to turn west to southwest Tuesday afternoon and may approach severe gale in exposed places, meaning the red wind warning could be extended.
