Cyclone Gabrielle: Gisborne resident struggling to clear metres-deep mud and silt covering property

  • 22/02/2023

After Cyclone Gabrielle tore through the North Island last week, it left in its wake the difficult task of removing piles of mud.

In Gisborne, resident Carl Brandt trudges through his lawn covered in two metres of silt and mud.

When Cyclone Gabrielle hit last week the flood waters rose 10 inches away from the top of his fence and left him with the mammoth task of digging out a thick layer of mud.

Brandt said he and his volunteer crew spent two hours removing the mud by his house's entrance.

"That's how sticky and horrible it is," Brandt told AM's co-host Melissa Chan-Green.

Brandt's hoping he can fit a digger through his narrow driveway to help remove some of the muddy mess.
