In pictures: Cyclone Gabrielle smashes into upper North Island causing flooding, power outages

Cyclone Gabrielle is battering the country causing flooding, power outages and significant damage.

Emergency officials have warned it is likely to be an unprecedented and dangerous weather event with MetService issuing 27 warnings and watches across the country. Gisborne, the Coromandel Peninsula, Auckland and Northland are all under a red heavy rain warning, while a red strong wind warning is also in place for Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula.

The worst of Cyclone Gabrielle's impacts are expected to be felt on Monday afternoon and Tuesday but some areas are already being hit hard.
