A violent aggravated robbery in Hamilton on Saturday afternoon has left a man hospitalised.
Police say they were called to a commercial premises on Heaphy Terrace after a report three men had entered the store with a machete and made demands.
One person was then assaulted, leaving them with a wound to the shoulder. They have been taken to hospital in a moderate condition. The offenders fled the scene in a vehicle.
In a statement, Commander Inspector Andrea McBeth called this type of violent incident "unacceptable" and said an investigation is underway.
"We are now working hard to identify and locate those involved so we can hold them accountable," she said.
"We would like to thank those members of the public who were present and who have been very proactive about getting information to us."
She added police have received several eyewitness accounts and footage, which will be "extremely useful" in the investigation.
"While we want to remind people never to put themselves in harm's way, we always encourage witnesses to come forward, and we greatly appreciate the assistance today."
