Cyclone Gabrielle ripped through much of the North Island leaving many communities devastated but MetService says she's finally moving "away from the country to the east".
MetService meteorologist Angus Hines told AM Cyclone Gabrielle is currently east of Gisborne and will move further east through the day.
"It's forecast to pass across or near the northern side of the Chatham Islands later today and bring some quite bad weather out there."
Hines says the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle are "expected to be weakening through the course of the day".
"That's both the rainfall becoming a bit patchier, a bit lighter and less extensive. And those wind gusts that have eased in most places already are going to continue to die away."
While wind is likely to stick around for many regions, Hines told AM gusts won't be as strong as they have been.
"It's more of just a standard breezy day today rather than a damaging breezy day."
And over the course of the week rainfall is likely to linger in parts of the motu too.
"Fortunately for the areas which are still to get a sizeable amount of rain are not those places which have been hammered already," Hines said.
"The spots that are lining up for further rainfall are mostly around the top of the South Island and in around central New Zealand too."
