Regions battered by Cyclone Gabrielle over the past week face the threat of more heavy rain this week.
"Some of our long-range models are showing a risk of heavy rain for the east coast of the North Island. The uncertainty is high at this stage; some models are indicating around 50mm over Friday and Saturday for the Wairoa district, others are more pessimistic," MetService tweeted.
Wairoa was one of the most hard-hit areas impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Many houses and streets were ruined after they were covered in copious amounts of silt from the severe weather event.
On Tuesday, MetService said a low is expected to develop along the east of the North Island on Thursday and stay in place until Saturday.
"It may generate an extended period of rain for the east coast of the North Island, including Gisborne and Hawke's Bay. There is a large amount of uncertainty about the exact location of this low and its movement," MetService said.
"However, there is low confidence of warning amounts of rain for Hawke's Bay and Gisborne south of the city on Thursday, rising to moderate on Friday and Saturday."
The Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions were the main areas impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle with the cleanup expected to take months.
The Government announced it would financially help with the cleanup with a $50 million interim relief package for the regions affected and $250 million to help rebuild the roads which were ruined.
