Footage of car mounting footpath, driving towards children sparks outrage

Footage of a car mounting the footpath and driving towards children has sparked outrage.

Auckland CBD local Su Yin Khoo captured the "idiot driver" while cycling with her three-year-old on Union St on Monday morning.

The footage shows the driver pulling into a bike lane before diverting onto the footpath and approaching dozens of young children and parents during rush hour traffic.

A mother and her children can be seen dodging the car as it continues down the footpath and turns back onto the road, avoiding a red light on its way.

People shared their anger with the driver on social media, with one person saying: "Absolutely ridiculous this person thinks they can drive like this."

Another chimed in with: "Centimetres from a child as well, criminal."

The incident occurred during the height of school traffic, on what Khoo's husband, Lance Wigg, said is already a dangerous crossing.

"Fatal risks like this happen almost every day on this road. Vulnerable people are subject to all of these fatal risks."

He said it's common for cars to drive straight into the road's cycle lane, and that Monday's events show this needs to be taken more seriously.

A number of locals have been asking Auckland Transport to do something about the unsafe road conditions for years, even pushing for Mayor Wayne Brown to be doing more.

"Wayne Brown said he was an action man, show us this action, do something," Wigg said.

They are asking for bollards to separate roads from cycle lanes, creating a more permanent solution to the risks.

Police have told Newshub they are aware of the incident and strongly condemn the behaviour shown.

"It is unacceptable and places pedestrians at risk of harm. Police encourage road users to be patient during peak hour traffic, and stick to the road rules at all times - they're there for everyone's safety."
