Kiwis in parts of the North Island are being warned about potential thunderstorms that could bring a wet end to the weekend.

MetService said a slow-moving front over the lower and central North Island will bring a period of heavy rain to western areas.

A heavy rain watch is in place for Mount Taranaki with MetService saying the area may see a period of heavy rain, which could see rainfall amounts approach warning criteria.

"The North Island's active weather is swathed across central and eastern areas today where thunderstorms are possible this afternoon," MetService said.

The rest of the North Island should see mainly fine weather on Sunday with Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga all having the chance of a few isolated showers in the afternoon.

The majority of the South Island should see fine weather on Sunday but MetService warns bad weather is on the way for early next week.

A heavy rain watch is in place for the ranges of Westland south of Whataroa and Fiordland from Monday afternoon to Tuesday.
