Thousands report feeling a magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Christchurch on Saturday afternoon.
As of time of publication, just under 7000 reported to GeoNet they had felt the quake which struck at 1:42pm. It was located 20km north-west of Akaroa at a depth of 5km.
GeoNet originally classified the shaking as "moderate", this has now been reduced to "light", with people reporting feeling the tremors from Auckland to Queenstown.
People flocked to social media to report feeling the shake.
"Wow, long, strong shake there," one person tweeted.
"That was a swear-worthy #eqnz. Rattley noisy beast," another tweeted.
"Felt that! No more please," wrote a third.
Almost 30 minutes later, a smaller magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck 15 km north-west of Akaroa. This quake was at a 6km depth and with "light shaking".
It comes as the North Island was rocked by multiple earthquakes in quick succession overnight.
