Thousands of people have been shaken by a 3.3-magnitude earthquake near Christchurch.

GeoNet said the quake struck just after midday on Wednesday.

The tremor caused "light" shaking, GeoNet said.

People as far south as Dunedin reported feeling the quake.

"At 9km deep, it was felt across the city with over 4000 felt reports received," GeoNet said in a statement.

"Coincidently, this is the second M3.3 earthquake for Christchurch this week.

"Although unsettling, this is normal activity for the area. Remember, drop, cover and hold is the right action to take in an earthquake."
