Terrifying footage has emerged of a smash and grab at Mt Maunganui's Bayfair Shopping Centre as bystanders watched on.
The footage, provided to Newshub by SunLive, shows the chaotic moment three offenders unleashed in their violent raid of a Michael Hill Jeweller store.
Sirens can be heard ringing as the three offenders smash the glass of the display cabinets, grabbing anything they could.
The three alleged thieves can be seen frantically dashing from cabinet to cabinet as they continue to cause destruction through the store.
The video, just over a minute long, shows the group quickly running from the store and through the shopping centre with the stolen items in hand.
One person, whose sister heard glass being smashed, told SunLive her sister heard a woman yell out 'gun'.
"She and her partner and their baby ran outside. They saw three armed youths smashing cabinets," the person said.
In a statement to Newshub, police said they were called at about 5:40pm on Sunday following a report of a robbery at Michael Hill.
"Three people entered the store - one of them allegedly armed, not a firearm, and took a number of items before fleeing."
The spokesperson said there were no injuries as a result of the raid.
"Police are making enquiries," the spokesperson said.
