Christchurch eye surgeon Ian Dallison handed more than six years in prison for attempted murder of ex-landlord

A Christchurch eye surgeon will spend more than six years in prison for the attempted murder of his ex-landlord by shooting a gun at him.

Ian William Dallison, 66, was sentenced at the High Court in Christchurch on Friday for attempting to murder 75-year-old Alberto Ceccerelli.

The August 2022 attack happened after Ceccerelli brought bankruptcy proceedings against Dr Dallison in the High Court for failing to pay rent, Justice Andru Isac said in his summary of facts.

On the day of the attack, Dr Dallison loaded his car with nine guns and 167 rounds of ammunition. Several of those guns were illegally possessed, Justice Isac said.

Dr Dallison used the internet and Google Maps to find Ceccerelli's Lyttleton home.

From there, he walked into the main part of the house and fired at Ceccerelli, attempting to kill him but missing, the judge said.

Dr Dallson got into a struggle with Ceccerelli and his wife, Antje Schmidt, as the couple attempted to remove the gun from his hand.

During the struggle, Dr Dallison gouged Schmidt's eye with the gun - appearing to have caused "lasting damage" by wounding and concussing her, Justice Isac said.

Neighbours heard Schmidt's screams for help and called the police.

Dr Dallison pleaded guilty to attempted murder and wounding with intent to injure late last year.

He was sentenced to a total of six years and 10 months imprisonment.
