Cost of living: Kiwis fume at leg of New Zealand lamb selling for cheaper in the UK

Kiwis are fuming after a social media photo revealed a leg of lamb is selling for significantly cheaper in the UK than in New Zealand.

A photo posted on Saturday on the Kiwis in London Facebook page showed a whole leg of lamb selling for half price at $12.82 (£6.50/kg) at a Sainsbury supermarket.

According to New Zealand's three largest supermarket websites, a whole New Zealand leg of lamb is selling for $17.99 per kg at Pak'nSave, $22.99 per kg at New World and $17.90 per kg or approximately $48.33 each at Countdown.

A whole leg of lamb weighs anywhere between 2.2kg to 3.2kg, so buying an entire leg of lamb is two to three times the kg amount advertised.

This has seen Kiwis fume on social media as the cost of living crisis continues to bite in New Zealand.

One person said, "This is just bull" when commenting on the post, while another person responded by saying, "lol why do the UK get our lamb cheaper than home".

A third person responded by saying, "this is why I was gobsmacked by the prices in the supermarkets when I was home!!"

The cost of living crisis has been hitting Kiwis hard over the last 12 to 24 months.

It was revealed last month New Zealand's GDP (gross domestic product) shrunk by 0.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to Stats NZ.

This means Aotearoa is just one quarter away from being in a recession.

Inflation is also hitting Kiwis hard, with our current annual consumer price index (CPI) sitting at 7.2 percent.

Annual inflation has skyrocketed from 4.9 percent in the September 2021 quarter compared to a whopping 7.2 percent in the same quarter last year. It comes after years of low inflation.
