Commuters on two South Island State Highways are facing delays ahead of the long weekend after separate crashes.
The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 1 in Marlborough, near Dashwood south of Weld Pass, is closed after a truck and trailer crash just before 8am.
"No local detours are available and the highway is expected to be closed for several hours while the crash scene is cleared.
"If travelling between Christchurch and Blenheim, drivers should delay their travel or use the inland route via Lewis Pass. This will add around two hours to travel times."
Earlier, a crash also blocked SH6 at Owen Junction in the Tasman District at about 5am.
"Efforts to clear the crash scene are ongoing and are expected to continue through this morning," Waka Kotahi said.
The agency said heavy traffic and delays were expected as a result of the SH6 crash as stop/go controls were in place.
