Man charged after assaulting two Takanini Burger King employees

A 26-year-old man has been charged after two south Auckland Burger King workers were seriously injured on Sunday.

Police confirmed charges had been laid and the man will appear in Papakura District Court on Monday charged with assault with intent to rob and wounds with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

"As the matter is before the Court, we are not in a position to comment further," police said.

It comes after police said they were called at around 3:10pm on Sunday after a report two people were injured at the premises on Great South Road in Takanini.

It's understood both of the victims are Burger King employees.

A police spokesperson said it's alleged a man stabbed two staff members before fleeing.

"They have both sustained serious injuries," they said.

Video footage shows a man with prominent neck tattoos sitting in the back of a police car after the incident.

The two injured people were transferred to Middlemore Hospital and are receiving treatment.

Detective Inspector Tofilau Fa'amanuia Va'aelua of Counties Manukau CIB says he wants to acknowledge how alarming this incident is.

"These two people were simply doing their jobs and could not have anticipated coming to work today and becoming victims in an incident like this," he said in a statement on Sunday.

"We will be supporting them and their families as we move through our investigation and the court process.

"We hope it is reassuring that we have made a quick arrest and will put this person before the courts to be held accountable."

Burger King has been contacted for comment.
