Manhunt underway for armed thieves who disguised themselves as police officers to rob North Shore home

A manhunt is underway for armed robbers who disguised themselves as police officers and targeted a property on the North Shore. 

The alleged thieves broke into a home on Tui Glen Road in Birkenhead at around 12:25am last Thursday.

They alleged thieves stole several items before fleeing in two cars. 

"Those involved are understandably shaken and police are providing support," a police spokesperson said. 

NZ Herald reports the group had pepper spray and guns on them but police couldn't confirm that. 

The spokesperson said the alleged offenders were wearing high-visibility vests with "police" labelling.  

"We do not believe the offenders were wearing any other clothing resembling police uniform and we are working to establish if the high-visibility vest was legitimate," the spokesperson said. 

They said in general, officers will be "clearly identifiable" in uniform and will be carrying police identification that can be presented upon request. 

"We advise anyone who is dealing with a representative or agency to question their identification if they are unsure," the spokesperson said. 

"If you feel unsafe or something does not feel right to you - please contact police as soon as you can."
