A coffee roastery north of Auckland has been severely damaged after an old oak tree came down on the building after strong winds overnight.
Rush Coffee owner Hayden Prujean told Newshub shortly after he woke up on Sunday morning he heard an "almighty crash".
An oak tree well over a hundred years old had split with a large part coming off the trunk and onto the roastery. He told Newshub the damage is "absolutely total".
"We're just really fortunate that no one was inside," he said.
"There's just debris everywhere. We would have been seriously injured or even killed if someone was inside."
Rush Coffee posted to Facebook informing its customers that as a result there will be supply issues.
"Unfortunately this means we are no longer able to fulfil orders at this time. All cafe customers have been contacted with alternative supply suggestions. Any website orders that were not shipped Friday will be refunded," its message read.
"Sorry for any inconvenience caused, we appreciate your support."
For now, Prujean has started to clear up with a chainsaw; he's also spoken to his insurers and is now waiting on them to come through.
"The problem is that we're likely to be quite a long time to be up and running again," he said.
"It's just one foot after the other really."
