One person has been hospitalised after a police car crashed into a bus stop in Auckland on Monday.
The police car crashed while looking into a vehicle of interest on Mount Albert's New North Road at around 11am.
Photos sent to Newshub show extensive damage to the car and bus stop.
A witness told Newshub they were inside when they heard screeching and a loud bang.
"I heard a police siren coming down the road. Then there was the sound of tyre screeching and a loud bang and a continuous beeping from a car's horn," they said.
"I came outside and saw the police SUV that crashed into the bus shelter. There was a white SUV on the opposite side of the road with its front damaged. I was there within a minute of the crash and there were already 4-5 plainclothes officers at the scene. The Eagle helicopter was already circling the sky above within a minute."
Inspector Kerry Watson told Newshub the crash happened after the officer tried to avoid another car driving out of a driveway.
Watson said the police car hit the car and bus stop and one of the car's occupants has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash and police are speaking to witnesses.
Anyone who saw the crash, and has not yet spoken to police, is asked to contact 105 quoting the reference number P054436004.
New North Road is currently closed between Mt Albert Road and McLean Street. People are urged to avoid the area or expect delays.
