Otago police say a 54-year-old woman has been charged after she was caught driving almost six times over the legal alcohol limit.

The woman was seen driving in an unsafe manner on Dunedin's Bruce Street at around 4:10pm on Thursday when police stopped her.

In a statement, Otago Coastal Area Commander Inspector Craig Brown said she returned a reading of 1400 micrograms on the excess breath alcohol test. This is almost six times the legal limit for drivers over 20 years old, which is 250 micrograms.

The woman is scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court on April 28.

In a separate incident, an 18-year-old man was charged for driving dangerously on Dunedin's Brockville Road at around 11pm on Thursday, April 6.

Police staff pursued the vehicle but abandoned their chase due to safety concerns. However, on Thursday April 13, enquiries led police to identify the driver and locate him.

He is scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court on April 18 on charges relating to failing to stop and driving the vehicle in a dangerous manner.

Insp Brown said the police will not tolerate dangerous behaviour on the roads, including excessive speed and drink driving.

"There's just no reasonable excuse for speeding," he said.

"We see the unnecessary harm on our roads as a result of excessive speed and decisions like driving while intoxicated every day."

He urged motorists not to drive after drinking and have a plan to get home or a sober driver to assist.

If motorists witness unsafe driving behaviour on the roads, they are encouraged to report it to police on 111 if it is happening now or 105 if it is after the fact.
