Police have named the tramper killed by a falling boulder on Mount Taranaki on Sunday.
He was Christoph Heinrich Huelsmann, 57, of Lower Hutt. Police extend their condolences to his family and friends.
Officers were called around 4pm after loose scree from the slopes dislodged a large boulder that struck Huelsmann. He died at the scene.
Police search and rescue, assisted by the Taranaki rescue helicopter trust team and members of the Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue team, worked to recover his body.
Enquiries are ongoing and the death has been referred to the Coroner.
