More than 1700 people have reported feeling a "moderate" earthquake in Christchurch overnight
The 4-magnitude quake hit just after 2:20am off the coast of New Brighton, at the shallow depth of 9km, GeoNet said.
Most people who reported the tremor to GeoNet described the shaking as "light" and "weak".
There are no reports of damage.
It was the third minor shake to hit Christchurch in the past 24 hours.
