A teenager has been injured after a tornado struck Paraparaumu on Tuesday morning, the third in as many days around the country.
This morning's tornado caused damage to at least four properties, with one coming off its piles.
The teenager is in hospital after the building he was sleeping in was destroyed by the tornado.
The teenager's father confirmed to Newshub the 16-year-old was asleep in a structure that was completely destroyed.
The teenager has been taken to Wellington Hospital for an assessment but is not believed to be seriously injured.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed the tornado hit at around 5:30am.
A spokesperson said at least eight properties have been damaged with roofs blown or lifted, while one house was lifted off its piles.
"Power lines are also down, while several trees have been blown over and fences destroyed," the spokesperson said.
FENZ said an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) drone crew will carry out an aerial assessment of damage following the tornado.
FENZ also confirmed a second, smaller tornado struck Waitara, Taranaki at about 1:15am, which saw a roof being lifted on a house.
Two Fire and Emergency crews attended to provide assistance, with both leaving the scene by 1:57am.
The tornado was first reported to have first hit Nikau Valley, before making its way out to sea.
"Fire and Emergency crews are working with residents to make their homes safe, including providing salvage sheets to cover their roofs," the spokesperson said.
"If residents need urgent emergency assistance, they are urged to call 111 and ask for Fire and Emergency. If they do not need urgent assistance, then Fire and Emergency ask residents to contact Kāpiti Coast District Council."
FENZ said they've responded to calls of damage to roofs on Aorangi Road in Paraparaumu and also have a team at Arundel Avenue following reports of damage there.
Newshub understands a roof may have been torn off near Awatea Avenue.
Police said they were made aware of what appeared to be a tornado in Paraparaumu at around 5:30am.
"A couple of reports of trees down and damage to roofs," a police spokesperson said.
Kāpiti Coast resident Sam Dunnett told AM on Tuesday the tornado caused a lot of damage in his neighbourhood.
"It's not the usual alarm clock … we had a tree down at the front of the yard, so that is what woke us up. It just started with heavy rain and a crash and a bang it was all over," he said.
"This is my backyard and this is what we came out to this morning, some poor bugger's roof in the backyard."
Dunnett said it felt like the tornado lasted a couple of minutes and it seems like everyone in his neighbourhood has been affected.
"The neighbour had a bit of roof come through and hit the front of his house. A few smashed windows, a few other neighbours' smashed windows and roof lying in their backyard."
A local on a Kāpiti Coast Facebook page said they had some damage following the tornado.
"Whoa what the heck was that!! We have some trees down and felt like the roof was going as well!!"
This is the third tornado in three days after previous ones hit Tasman and Auckland over the weekend.
In Tasman, around 12 roofs were lifted off homes on Monday afternoon after wild weather hit the area while inspections are underway in east Auckland after a tornado left a trail of destruction.
