An onlooker at a street racing event has been hospitalised after a car doing burnouts crashed into them in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Newshub was sent a video of the moment, which took place in Himatangi near Palmerston North. The video shows a man walking towards a crowd of onlookers with his back turned to the road before a car skidding along the street crashes into him, forcing him to the ground.
St John said the man was taken from the scene at the intersection of Himatangi Beach Rd and State Highway 1 to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition.
Police said they were called to the scene at 1:15am, but by the time officers arrived the group of cars involved in the event had left the scene.
"Lines of enquiry are being followed to locate those involved."
