Aucklanders will be needing their umbrellas if heading out and about this weekend and next week with a "month's worth of rain" set to hit parts of New Zealand.
MetService has issued heavy rain watches for Auckland, Northland and Coromandel as "an active front associated with a subtropical low" sweeps over from Saturday night.
The forecaster has also put strong wind watches in place for Northland and Auckland including Great Barrier Island.
NIWA said the wild weather was the result of low pressure forming south of New Caledonia and moving towards New Zealand.
"What does this mean for the upper NI? Strong, gusty wind this weekend," a post on the forecaster's Twitter page said.
MetService was monitoring the conditions and would update severe weather warnings as needed, meteorologist Alwyn Bakker said in a statement.
From Sunday until next Friday, WeatherWatch is warning areas including Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Nelson and West Coast could get "at least one month's worth of rain".
"Other regions may also be affected," the forecaster said in a statement on Friday. "Much of this rain will be spread over a number of days - with a mixture of light drizzly falls and heavier downpours.
"As for damaging wind potential... winds will develop from today and Saturday over the upper North Island and look to peak on Sunday and Monday with gales gusting 70 to 90km/h in the more exposed places."
