There are 12,277 new community cases of COVID-19 and a further 50 virus-related deaths over the past week, the Ministry of Health has revealed.
The Health Ministry gave the update - which covers the seven-day period from Monday, May 1 to Sunday, May 7 - on Monday.
Of the deaths reported, one was less than 10 years old, two were in their 20s, one was in their 30s, one was in their 50s, three were in their 60s, 13 were in their 70s, 18 were in their 80s and 11 were aged over 90. Of these people, 31 were women and 19 were men.
The Ministry of Health said as of midnight on Sunday, 249 people are in hospital with the virus, 12 of whom are in intensive care.
Overall, New Zealand has reported over 2.3 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.
Last week the Health Ministry reported 11,063 new community cases, 26 virus-related deaths, 265 people in hospital, and eight in ICU.
