There are 14,657 new community cases of COVID-19 and a further 79 virus-related deaths over the past week, the Ministry of Health has revealed.
The Health Ministry gave the update, which covers the seven-day period from Monday, May 15 to Sunday, May 21, on Monday.
Of the deaths reported, one was less than 10 years old, two were in their 20s, two were in their 30s, two were in their 40s, nine were in their 60s, 12 were in their 70s, 26 were in their 80s, and 25 were aged over 90. Of these people, 38 were women and 41 were men.
The Ministry of Health said as of midnight on Sunday, 247 people are in hospital with the virus, eight of whom are in intensive care.
The total number of people whose deaths are attributed to COVID-19 is now 2893.
Overall, New Zealand has reported over 2.3 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.
Last week the Health Ministry reported 11,739 new community cases, 66 virus-related deaths, 247 people in hospital, and six in ICU.
