A Dunedin teenager has confessed to killing his 45-year-old mother using a 10kg dumbbell while in bed.
The 18-year-old, who has interim name suppression, entered the early guilty plea when he appeared in the High Court at Dunedin on Tuesday morning.
The summary of facts revealed he was celebrating his birthday on the night of January 13 with a friend and his mother, before the friend left.
In the early hours of January 14, he struck the victim's head with a 10kg dumbbell multiple times while she lay in bed.
He then placed towels on the stovetop and turned the stove on.
The court heard he then left the Helensburgh Rd address and walked 4km to a Fea St address in blood-stained clothes. He knocked on the door and asked to use the phone to call police.
During the call, he advised an ambulance was not needed and police should "just go in" because no one was going to answer.
He described the assault as "very" serious and when asked about the type of assault, he replied "a murder".
When police officers arrived at the scene, there was a haze of smoke in the kitchen and the fire alarm was beeping.
The name of the victim has also been suppressed.
Her 18-year-old son is due to be sentenced in August.
