'Incredible' footage captured of waterspout towering over Foxton Beach

Incredible footage has shown a waterspout towering over Foxton Beach on Monday morning, with locals describing it as "incredible".

Footage sent to Newshub shows the two waterspouts just off the coast.

MetService confirmed there was a waterspout in Foxton but added they're not uncommon.

"These are not uncommon and can happen due to sharp differences between winds lower down and higher up in the atmosphere ahead of a cold front, often with a thunderstorm or two," MetService said.

Foxton local Jacqui Lewis told Newshub it was her son that first spotted the waterspout.

"It was my son who looked out the window and he said, 'Oh, is that a tornado spout forming out there'?

"He looked out because we're across the road from the water, and we came outside and it came down, touched down quite quickly," she said.

She told Newshub there were two waterspouts, one smaller than the other, and it was pretty incredible to watch.

"You could see the water and the spray around the bottom sort of thing, it was incredible," she said.
