Night of crime: Axe-wielding thieves smash into Christchurch supermarket, eight burglaries

Christchurch police have been busy overnight responding to eight burglaries in the space of three hours.

The first burglary occurred at a supermarket on Skyhawk Road in the suburb of Wigram at 3:30am.

A police spokesperson said the front doors of the supermarket were smashed by offenders using an axe.

Just an hour later, police responded to two burglaries in 10 minutes.

The first occurred at a store on Chappie Place in the suburb of Hornby. Then just 10 minutes later, police were called to an attempted ram raid of a liquor store on Carmen Road.

The offenders failed to break into the liquor store and a fog cannon was activated.

Police then responded to a second attempted ram raid at a technology store on Main South Road at 4.40am.

Just 20 minutes later, there was another ram raid where four offenders used a vehicle to break -in to a Noel Leeming store on Moorhouse Ave.

Staff could be seen cleaning up broken glass at the store just after 6am on Monday.

A break-in was also reported at a business on The Runway in Wigram at about 5am, followed by a break-in at a fish and chip shop and neighbouring hair salon on Lillian Street, Halswell at about 6:30am, police said.

Police confirmed they've arrested one person so far after being seen by officers jumping a fence on Halswell Road.

"The young man was located with items of interest and was taken into custody," police said.

"Enquiries are ongoing, however anyone with information is asked to call police on 105 and reference the event number P054725432."

Officers are working with business owners to establish what has been stolen and are reviewing CCTV footage.

An examination will also be carried out on a vehicle left at the scene of the attempted ram raid on Main South Road.
