Auckland traffic is blocked after a police incident caused northbound and southbound lanes of a major Auckland motorway to close.

The northbound closures started on the southwestern motorway at Neilson St, and the southbound closures started at Queenstown Road at 4:45pm.

According to Google Maps, the traffic in the northbound lanes is currently backed up for nearly 10 kilometres.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is asking motorists to delay travel is possible and to avoid the area.

The lanes have now reopened.

'The Southwestern motorway near Hillsborough has reopened, after an incident on an overbridge was resolved safely.' police told Newshub in a statement.

Police are thanking motorists impacted by the closure for their patience and cooperation.
